One common flaw of home-recorded albums is that they lack cohesion. When a band is paying $2,000 a day for a studio, it tends to sharpen their focus a bit. Case in point: the Evening Episode's debut The Physicist Has Known Sin. Recorded entirely in the band's home studio in Sacramento, this ten-track album is devoid of any well-defined style or theme. What is consistent throughout the work is an uncomfortable mix of random electronica, overly-dramatic vocals, and organic instrumentation.
At the heart of The Physicist's indecisiveness is vocalist/theriminist Teresa Eggers, who tries everything from seductive coohs to squealing raps, neither of which is especially successful. Also problematic is the band's inability to end a song. Several songs fail to end at all, instead giving way to electronic sections that feel tacked on and useless. Other songs just go on forever.
Overall, The Physicist comes off like the soundtrack for a low-budget sci-fi/romance movie, if such a thing even exists. The two best tracks on the album are “Who, What How When” and “Lovely Creatures”. Here there are pretty violins and drums, slower vocals with less gasping, and an appropriate mix of electronica. These two songs show the strength of the quartet and where they should focus their efforts on future work.
